MetaMask Login — Getting Started with MetaMask

A practical, security-focused walkthrough to install MetaMask, create your wallet, log in safely, and manage access to dApps.

What is MetaMask?

MetaMask is a cryptocurrency wallet and gateway to Web3 that runs as a browser extension and mobile app. It stores private keys locally, lets you manage multiple accounts, sign transactions, and interact with decentralized applications (dApps).

Before You Start

  • Use an up-to-date browser (Chrome, Firefox, Brave, Edge) or the official MetaMask mobile app.
  • Only download MetaMask from official sources — the browser extension store entry or the official website.
  • Prepare a secure place to store your recovery phrase (offline and private).

Step 1 — Install MetaMask

  1. Visit the official MetaMask page on your browser's extension store or the official site and click Install.
  2. Confirm the extension permissions when prompted; permissions relate to website interaction but MetaMask never transmits your private keys to sites.
  3. After installation, the MetaMask fox icon will appear in your browser toolbar.

Step 2 — Create a New Wallet or Import

Open the extension and choose Create a Wallet to set up a new account or Import Wallet if you already have a recovery phrase.

  • Set a strong local password (used to unlock the extension on this device).
  • MetaMask will display a 12-word (or 24-word) recovery phrase — write it down on paper and store it securely offline. Do not store it digitally where it can be copied.
  • Confirm the phrase when prompted to complete setup.

Step 3 — Logging In to MetaMask

Logging in (unlocking) MetaMask on your device requires the local password you set. To access your wallet from a new device, use the recovery phrase to import your wallet into MetaMask.

Step 4 — Connect to a dApp (Carefully)

When a website requests connection, MetaMask will show a permission dialog. Check the requesting domain, the account being offered, and the permissions requested. Only connect if you trust the site.

Security Best Practices

  • Never share your recovery phrase or private keys. No legitimate support will ask for them.
  • Keep your device and browser updated to reduce attack surface.
  • Use hardware wallets (e.g., Ledger, Trezor) for large balances and connect them to MetaMask for signing transactions.
  • Consider a dedicated browser profile for Web3 activity to reduce exposure to malicious extensions.
  • Verify contract addresses and transaction details before approving signatures.

Troubleshooting Common Login Issues

  • Forgot password: You can restore access by importing your recovery phrase into MetaMask on the same or another device.
  • Extension not responding: Restart your browser or disable conflicting extensions. Clear cache if necessary but ensure you have your recovery phrase first.
  • Wrong network: Make sure MetaMask is set to the correct network (Ethereum Mainnet, Polygon, BSC, etc.) for the dApp you use.

Advanced Tips

  • Use MetaMask’s permission management to revoke unused connections.
  • Create multiple accounts for everyday spending and long-term storage.
  • Keep an emergency plan: store a copy of your recovery phrase in a geographically separate safe place if possible.
